Wilhelm was drafted into the Russian Army at 19 years of age. When Karensky came to power in Russia, he offered Germans to join the revolution or walk home, he left for Lublinov where he found the parents dead and the farm destroyed. He continued to walk towards Germany, was captured by Germans but allowed to work on a farm, where he met his wife. Before his emigration to Canada he worked for the Railroad in Germany.
Wilhelm married Leokadia STREICHERT, daughter of (Husband) STREICHERT and (Wife) FIEDLER, in 1919 in Nogath, Kr. Graudenz, W.Prussia. (Leokadia STREICHERT was born on 25 Mar 1896 in Rutkovsky Khutor, Ukraine, died on 5 Feb 1982 in Vancouver, , BC and was buried in Tsawassen, , BC.)
